Communication Tips

Even with the assistance of technology, communicating with hearing loss can be difficult, which can have a major effect on conversation with loved ones, in the workplace, and in social situations.

Communicating with someone with hearing loss:

  • Gain your listener’s attention before speaking, and maintain eye contact
  • Speak clearly and naturally
  • Continue to face your communication partner, and avoid covering your face
  • Repeat and rephrase if you are misunderstood
  • Reduce and/or avoid background noise as much as possible

If you experience hearing loss:

  • Tell others how best to talk to you
  • Utilize visual cues
  • Don’t bluff, admit when you miss something or don’t understand
  • Express appreciation for the accommodations your communication partner made
